In May 2010, the Municipality of Strumica and the management of the municipal primary school “Marshal Tito” from Strumica expressed their interest to apply the Nansen model for integrated education within their municipality. The project for integrated education was officially launched in November 2010. After a series of meetings with the Director of the school and the Mayor of the Municipality of Strumica, the project was approved and the terms of partnership were determined.
The project gained support from the Mayor and the municipal council which gave approval to allocate funds from the municipal budget for the needs of project.
In a short period, selection of teachers who will work on the project was made and the Team for education, training and development of NDC Skopje provided a series of trainings on the topic “Integrated and bilingual education”.
In September, 2010, the project was presented in front of the parents of the Macedonian and Turkish students in first grade and it received the necessary support to begin with the implementation.
Today, two classes are included in the project, with a total number of 32 students, out of which 16 are Macedonians, 16 Turks. The regular teaching process is performed in one classroom in two shifts.
The regular teaching is being implemented by two teachers (Macedonians), whereas for the extracurricular activities, two teachers from the Turkish ethnic community are being engaged.
The bilingual extracurricular activities are performed on daily basis, by using the curriculum from five different sections, in duration of 60 minutes.
Within the school, three different programs are implemented, one is intended for the students, and the others for their parents and teachers.
The Team of NDC Skopje provides regular mentoring and support to the teachers, students and parents. |
